Are you up for it?
Good. Because this tutorial was developed just for you.
By the end of this tutorial, you’ll clearly see why hydrogel masks are a must-have.
Now let’s give you some more information . .
1.0: What Are Hydrogel Masks?
Hydrogel masks are gel-based facial masks made primarily from water, gelling agents, and skin-loving actives, set into a flexible, jelly-like sheet that sits snugly on the face.
Unlike traditional sheet masks that rely on fabric soaked in serum, hydrogel masks are the serum.
Hydrogel masks are:
- Thicker
- More elastic
- Cooler on the skin
- And able to hold a much higher concentration of actives
This gel structure allows for better adhesion, slower evaporation, and deeper hydration during use. That’s why when you apply a hydrogel mask, it almost feels like it’s melting into your skin.
That’s not magic, that’s formulation science.
1.1: How Are Hydrogel Masks Used?
Hydrogel masks are used as intensive treatment masks.
Typically:
- Cleanse the face properly
- Apply toner (optional but recommended)
- Place the hydrogel mask directly on the skin
- Leave on for 15–30 minutes
- Remove and gently massage in any residue
Because hydrogel masks sit tightly on the skin and don’t dry out quickly, they allow longer contact time, which improves ingredient performance.
They are commonly used:
- Before events
- During spa facials
- After treatments (like exfoliation or mild procedures)
- As weekly skin-boosting rituals
2.0: Why Hydrogel Masks?
Simple answer? Performance.
Hydrogel masks were developed to solve common problems that exist with regular sheet masks.
Regular sheet masks dry quickly, deliver actives unevenly, and often have poor skin contact.
Hydrogel masks fix these sheet mask problems by:
- Locking moisture into the gel matrix
- Creating a semi-occlusive layer on the skin
- Allowing ingredients to absorb slowly and effectively
What a win!
Hydrogel masks are especially powerful for dehydrated skin, brightening and plumping treatments, compromised skin barriers, and post-procedure care.
2.1: Why Are They So Popular?
Three major reasons:
1. Sensory experience: They feel luxurious. Cool. Bouncy. Premium.
2. Visible results: Plumper skin. Better hydration. Immediate glow.
3. Content & aesthetics: Let’s be honest, hydrogel masks look GOOD on camera 😌
They photograph well, video well, and market well. That’s why Korean brands leaned heavily into them, and the rest of the world followed.
2.2: Are Hydrogels Better Than Other Masks?
Well, it depends on what you want in a mask. One thing is for sure, Hydrogel masks are Different!
Hydrogel masks were not developed to replace cleansing masks like clay or exfoliating masks. They were created for treatment.
They shine when the goal is:
- Hydration
- Repair
- Infusion of actives
- Skin calming
If you want your mask to go beyond cleansing, the hydrogels are your best bet.
Think of hydrogel masks as treatment masks, not cleansing or detox masks.
3.0: The Structure: Ingredients & Factors
A basic hydrogel mask consists of three major phases. Once you understand these phases, you can formulate almost any hydrogel mask with confidence.
- Phase 1 – Water Phase : This phase makes up almost 70% of the structure. and you’ve got room to explore. You can blend water, hydrosols, and skin-loving botanical liquids
- Phase 2 – Gelling System: This phase is crucial to texture and requires a precise proportion. Ingredients with dual benefits also play well here, doubling as a gelling system as well as an active ingredients. Options to use here include collagen, alginates, and carrageenan, blended with humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid
- Phase 3 – Actives: This phase customizes further to target skin concerns. Here we play with actives like vitamins, niacinamide, and very essential botanical extracts
With these 3 phases, you have a structured hydrogel mask. . But rmember that the balance matters.
Too soft → the mask tears
Too hard → uncomfortable on the face
Too watery → won’t set
Too thick → poor absorption
This is why controlled formulation is key. Great thing we are here to show you the easiest controlled formulation method.
3.1: What you Need
Making a good hydrogel mask requires the right ingredients that represent all 3 phases, and a controlled formulation technique. You need controlled heating, mixing, and molding at a specific temperature, all done within a specific time frame.
Because of the complexity of the process, we developed a system to simplify the process using our device called the COC Mask Making Machine .
The COC Mask Making Machine is a compact, countertop formulation device designed specifically for hydrogel masks. It allows you to heat, mix, and set your hydrogel formulation under controlled conditions, solving common problems like uneven texture, poor setting, tearing, or failed batches.
To make things even easier, we paired the device with a signature collagen-based hydrogel tablet, removing the guesswork around ratios and structure so you can focus on formulation creativity and results.

The box contains:
- 1 × COC Mask Making Machine
- 1 × Power Adapter
- 1 × Cleaning Brush
- 1 × Measuring Cup
- 1 × Plastic Scraper
- 1 × Silicone Mask Plate
- 1 × English Manual
- 32 × Collagen + Humectant Hydrogel Mask Tablets (1-Month Supply)
This is everything you need to create fresh hydrogel masks from scratch, easily, safely, and in as little as 5 minutes.

4.0: The Product & The Formula
Now let’s get into the heart of it. But before we jump in, one thing needs to be very clear:
👉 Hydrogel masks are not achieved with random mixing. Hydrogels are formulated using heat, timing, balance, structure, and controlled equipment.
This is not “pour and pray” type of formulation!
The gel texture, the way the mask sets, how it sits on the skin, and how it delivers actives are all results of intentional formulation choices. Once you understand this, hydrogel masks stop feeling complicated, and everything clicks.
4.1 : THE PRODUCT
In this tutorial, we’ll be creating an all natural VITAMIN C GLOW HYDROGEL MASK
This is a glow mask designed to do more than give temporary shine. With consistent use, it helps brighten the appearance of dark spots, revive dull and tired skin, improve overall skin tone, and restore a healthy, plump glow. It is especially suitable for skin that looks stressed, sun-exposed, dehydrated, uneven, or simply lacking life.
This is the kind of mask you reach for when the skin looks flat and you want it to look fresh, rested, and radiant again
4.2 : THE INGREDIENTS
To represent our 3 phases, We’ll be using 3 solid ingredients
- Rosewater: this serves as the calming and conditioning base of this formula. Rosewater will help to tone the skin, improve skin comfort, and create a soft, hydrating foundation that prepares the skin to receive actives. It also contributes to the luxurious skin feel that makes hydrogel masks so enjoyable to wear.
- Fresh Citrus Juice : Using a combination of orange and lemon juice provides a natural source of vitamin C along with mild fruit acids that help support brighter-looking, more even-toned skin over time. This will help revive dull skin, improve the appearance of dark areas, and promote a healthier, more radiant complexion. Because it is fresh and active, it delivers that immediate “skin wake-up” effect hydrogel masks are loved for.
- COC Hydrogel Collagen Tablet: This is the most critical component and where structure meets performance. The tablet is responsible for forming the hydrogel itself, giving the mask its jelly-like texture, elasticity, and ability to set properly in a mold. Beyond structure, it supports skin plumpness, hydration retention, and close skin contact, allowing the mask to deliver its benefits more effectively. Without this step, you don’t get a hydrogel mask, you just get liquid.
What makes this formula powerful is balance. Each ingredient has a clear role, and together they create a mask that hydrates, brightens, plumps, and delivers a truly premium treatment experience when used fresh.
4.3 : THE FORMULA
For simplicity and beginner-friendliness, we’ll be working with volume instead of weight in this tutorial.
